Who is Mamman Shata?
Mamman Shata is a prominent Hausa musician whose fame has extended beyond borders. Born in Musawa, Katsina State, and later relocating to Kano, his legacy continues even after his demise in Daura as per his last wish. He has composed songs that resonate to this day, with an exact count unknown, but estimated at around two hundred songs. His music reflects truth and sincerity, where each piece he created was genuine without any alterations.
Regarding Dr. Mamman Shata's passion for music, he expressed, "I found music in Musawa where I began singing, and wherever I traveled, my music followed."
Inquired about signs indicating that he is a musician by nature, he elaborated, "It's a natural inclination, be it poverty or affluence. I've never lied or stolen; I only earn money through my artistry."
The moniker "Shata" was given to him by Sidi Magaji Salamu which stuck with him throughout his life. It distinguishes him as the son of Mai Daki – towering high above all.
When asked if any song holds more significance than others or stands out among his extensive catalog of creations, he humbly remarked, "Every song I create is a masterpiece on its own, and anyone may find true value in it as its essence may not be immediately evident."
In line with how the Hausa musicians craft their music uniquely tailored to their audience, there are distinctive tunes like "Bakandamiya" celebrated for its deeply rooted association within their culture. However, Dr. Mamman Shata failed to receive recognition for this particular song.
One of God's bestowed talents to the artist is his ability to compose music spontaneously or during planned performance engagements. For instance, his performance at Dajin-runhu contrasts with his live show at Canada Centre during his visit to the United States.
In accordance with the traditional norms of the Hausa people where musicians convey messages through their works in an enlightening manner, songs like "Birni Uwawu" or "Na-malumfashi Habu Dan-mama" were created not only for entertainment but also for educating individuals on societal norms.
Commenting on these important elements of traditional Hausa music culture, Dr. Mamman Shata emphasized, "These are their peculiarities - what I impart is what they understand; those with knowledge grasp what I convey."
